As I stuck my thumb out and watched several cars drive by, I kept<\/em>
\nplodding up the busy and unsafe roadway. Finally a park ranger<\/em>
\narrived \u2014 more specifically a law enforcement agent. Cool, I<\/em>
\nthought, I\u2019m going to get a ride.<\/em>
\nThat didn\u2019t happen. Instead I got hassled! The law enforcement<\/em>
\nofficer rolled down her window and, without asking me if<\/em>
\neverything was okay \u2014 if I had car trouble, if I was hurt, etc., said<\/em>
\nin a firm and authoritative voice, \u201cWho are you and what are<\/em>
\nyou doing?\u201d<\/em>
\nIt was obvious what I was doing \u2014 and I told her who I am. Either<\/em>
\nshe never heard of me or wasn\u2019t impressed with my writing, as<\/em>
\nthe next thing that came out of her was \u201cHitchhiking is illegal.”<\/em><\/h4>\n
