Trails have prominently played a role in the history of this community of 60,000, the second largest city in Wyoming. And this small city located along the North Platte River at the base of Casper Mountain is flush with biking and hiking trails. Wyoming touts itself as the Cowboy State, where horseback riders are as ubiquitous as pronghorns on the state’s vast plains—but in Casper, bicyclists, hikers, and runners swarm the trails. I was excited to run in this year’s Casper Marathon, which is predominantly on trails!

The first and only other time I’ve been to Casper was back in the spring of 1980. I was 18 years old and on my way back home on an around the country bicycle trip that involved more than 13,000 miles. Yep—I’ve been an endurance junky for some time. Forty-six years later I finally returned to this city and to Wyoming in general—and it was still pretty recognizable to me. While Washington State has been adding about 80,000 to 100,000 new residents a year for decades now—Wyoming has only added a little more than 100,000 new residents in more than four decades! The Casper skyline with its iconic “egg beater” tower looked pretty much to me as it did back in 1980. Sure, there are Starbucks in the city now, and public art, and new parks and developments—but this city still retains a feeling of the wild west—or in Wyoming parlance—the Wyld West. WY is the postal abbreviation for the state. It took me awhile to figure out why I kept seeing wild spelled wyld there. My cognition is slower than my running at times!

I was finally back in Wyoming and was there to run and to research for some magazine articles. One of my assignments was on the state’s role in the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express Trails. And one of my assignments was to check out the newer recreation trails in Casper. On my first day in the city, Wayne Stewart from the Casper Area Convention &Visitors Bureau (Visit Casper) took me on a trail run on Casper Mountain. The trails were flowy, the views were sweeping, the wildflowers divine, and the wind—a constant in this state—was quite calm. I later returned to this long flat top mountain just south of the city to hike its famous Civilian Conservation Corp built Bridle Trail. It lead to Garden Falls, Split Rock, rocky viewpoints, and miles of cool forest—a rare commodity in this state of wide open spaces.

I could have used some of that cool forest on race day, because a heat wave with temps in the 90s arrived just in time for the event. While most of the race course is on trails—they’re paved with very little shade. I’m no stranger to running in the heat—I did my first 100K in 90s. I was ready for the challenge. Thankfully the aid stations volunteers did a remarkable job of helping me from overheating.

One of the larger marathons (but by no means large) in the state and Boston-certified, the Casper Marathon was founded by the Windy City Striders Running Club back in 2002. They realized the need for a topnotch event in the city. And as a non-profit running club, their race is really focused on taking care of runners. The entry fee was modest. The race’s swag was really useful including a collapsible cooler, bandana, and a Wyld Gear Magna Cap insulated water bottle. That last one was quite nice.

The race was well-organized, supported by a great bunch of friendly and helpful volunteers, and the food at the finish line was some of the best I’ve had at a marathon. There were around 100 of us running the marathon, another 100 in the half, a good number in the 10K and in the marathon relay division. So overall a decent number of us out there. I was never alone and I met some new friends. I also ran into some familiar faces like John Shangin, a fellow Washingtonian. We met in Cincinnati last year at the Flying Pig Marathon. John and I are both members of the 50 States Marathon Club, and this race attracts a fair number of club members from all over the country and Canada.

The race started at 6 am and an early start usually means a couple of hours of comfortable temperatures for running. But not this time—it was already almost 70 at the start and I was a little dehydrated and nauseous from something I ate earlier. When the cannon went off and we were on our way, I was not feeling too good. We started on a bluff at an elevation of 5300 feet. I had been in the area for four days and had done some hiking and running at 6 to 7,000 feet, but this morning I was sucking air. It was probably due to being a little dehydrated.

By mile one I was suffering and thinking that this race was just not going to work out for me. The first few miles were on roads on an open grassy bluff. We passed one lone pronghorn and were granted some good views of the nearby National Historic Trails Center, the city below and Casper Mountain behind it. I was getting frustrated as I kept falling farther behind. One thing I learned from all of my ultra-running is to push through discomfort. Finally at about mile 5 on a long downhill, I started to feel better.

We hit the North Platte River Trail and I was in a good groove. The race then headed down the wide streets of the historic Old Yellowstone District, a revitalized old railyard. It was then back on trails for a big loop around a golf course and a long out and back along the river. The trail passed some interesting points including Fort Casper which was a strategic crossing area of the river for emigrants on the historic Oregon, California and Mormon Trails. Views of the rippling river were sublime. I concentrated on the views as the temperatures pushed into the high 80s. Except for a few cottonwoods here and there, we were feeling the sun. Luckily the strong forecasted winds didn’t kick in until near the very end.

There were aid stations every two miles and I hydrated heavily at each one. I also stuffed ice into my hat and took electrolyte replenishments. I avoided any cramping and overheating and actually ran stronger the second half of the race improving my overall standing. Again I attribute to this to all of my hard ultra-running training and racing. I finished just over 5 hours, my slowest marathon time ever—but it was still enough to land me a third place in my age division and a middle of the pack placing. Nearly everyone else out there was feeling the heat, too.

I was impressed with the offerings at the finish. Chocolate milk (my favorite post-race drink), sparkling water, wraps, fresh fruit, big chocolate-chip cookies, pizza, beer, and so much more. I really wish I didn’t have to make a four drive afterward to Cody so I could have grabbed a beer and sit in the shade by the river. My new collapsible cooler from the race however came in handy for packing goodies for the long drive—and good thing too as my appetite kicks in a few hours after finishing the race. No potatoes at this finish, but I took in plenty over the next couple of days as I recovered. Nutrition and training are my main focuses now, as I prepare to take on my second 100 mile run coming up at the end of July. I have run a marathon or ultra every month of this year so far—the most I’ve ever done in a year—and the year’s only half over. I’m so grateful that I can continue to push myself at this level, as I officially became a senior citizen (gasp) last month.
