Bird counters, pika monitors, and sea turtle patrols\u2014move over! Volunteers are now being recruited to count ticks! Governmental agencies, universities, conservation groups, and public health administrations have been growing alarmed over the increase of tick populations. \u201cWe know tick populations are ballooning like our federal deficit,\u201d said Rex Rezults of the US Department of Agriculture. \u201cBut unlike the deficit,\u201d he said. \u201cWe hope we can control the tick population.\u201d To do this, a consortium of government and private agencies have literally launched a tick tock calling for volunteers to go out into the forests, fields, and swamps and do annual tick counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTime is ticking away,\u201d states Rezults. \u201cWe need to put our finger on just how many ticks are out there,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no better way to do that than to have them on your fingers\u2014and legs\u2014full body if possible\u2014and get an accurate count.\u201d US Secretary of Health and Human Service, Robert F Kennedy Jr agrees, and dismisses any concerns about ticks being vectors of diseases. \u201cHell, I\u2019ve lied down in fields shirtless letting those little buggers crawl all over me,\u201d boasted the secretary. \u201cThey are rendered harmless if you snort a few lines before letting them bite you,\u2019 he continued. \u201cAnd besides everyone knows Lyme disease is caused by deodorants\u2014I  don\u2019t touch the stuff\u2014that\u2019s why I\u2019m always shirtless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tick expert and pathologist Kreepy Krally concurs. \u201cTick bathing can be kind of cathartic. Watching their heads bury deep into your skin and seeing their bodies bloat\u2014it\u2019s a beautiful experience.\u201d Krally is excited to be a part of the tick counting launch and hopes it\u2019s successful. \u201cThe last count I was involved with didn\u2019t turn out too well,\u201d recalls Krally. \u201cTurns out catching rattlesnakes and counting the rings in their rattles should only be done by professional snake charmers!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
